The future of motor underwriting: data, responsibility and managing risk

Information
As motor risk becomes more complex, underwriting is increasingly shaped by data, technology and changing customer behaviour. However, greater access to data does not automatically translate into better outcomes, raising questions around how it should be used, who is responsible for acting on it, and where the role of the insurer begins and ends. At the same time, evolving vehicle technology, shifting usage patterns and external factors such as fuel costs are changing how risk presents itself.
This session will examine how underwriting is evolving beyond traditional pricing models, what role data should play in supporting risk management, and how insurers can balance insight, responsibility and customer outcomes in a more complex environment.
• How should underwriters be using data to support better risk understanding rather than simply refining price?
• Where should responsibility sit between insurer and policyholder when it comes to managing risk?
• What are the practical limits of telematics and usage-based models in today’s market?
• How is driver behaviour changing, and how should underwriting respond?
• What capabilities and approaches will define effective motor underwriting over the next five years?
